Subject Lead for Mathematics: Mrs Tracy Boswell

Why Study Core Maths?

Core Maths builds on and develops mathematical understanding and skills in the application of mathematics to real life problems in a variety of contexts. The qualification gained provides an excellent basis for the mathematical demands that students face at university and within employment across a broad range of academic, professional, and technical fields. Core Maths will be particularly useful for those progressing to higher education courses with a specific mathematical and statistical content such as Psychology, Geography and Business Studies.

Core Maths is an excellent additional qualification that will support and deepen the mathematical learning already required from other A level qualifications such as Psychology, Biology, Geography, Sociology, Sports Science and PE.

Course Description

The course requires two years of teaching time and is equally weighted with an AS equivalent for UCAS points. This qualification will be taken alongside A levels or other qualifications.

The main topics studied will include:

  • Analysis of data
  • Personal finance
  • Critical analysis of data
  • Normal distribution
  • Estimation and predicting models
  • Probabilities
  • Correlation and regression

Studying Core Maths will help students develop their quantitative and problem-solving skills. This will give them confidence in understanding the mathematical content in the other courses they are studying. Core Maths will help students become better informed citizens, able to make sense of the information they will be presented with in employment, further study or later life.

Entry Requirements

The Core Maths qualification is offered for students with grades 4-9 in GCSE Mathematics who wish to continue to study a Level 3 mathematics qualification alongside their main programme of study in Year 12 and 13.
