Independent Learning

In Years 7, 8 and 9 students will have two Independent Learning Projects for homework each term, making a total of twelve over the year, two for each core subject (English, Mathematics and Science) and one for all other foundation subjects.

These are enquiry-based projects with a high degree of choice about how students respond to the exploration.  Each week, students will have a choice of tasks and even the freedom to develop their own to meet the learning objective. There are weekly checks on all students’ progress and a minimum expectation relative to a student’s ability.  There is, however no ceiling on how much a student can do and many do much more than the minimum as they are inspired by the learning journey and its freedoms.

Each project leads to a final piece, which reflects the learning.  Again, students are often given the choice over how they present this. Gold, silver and bronze certificates are awarded at the end of each term for the projects and gold and silver awards earn reward points for students which are recorded electronically.

The projects are recorded on the VLE for students and parents.  Teachers also use this to confirm receipt of work by students and provide feedback.  Details of ILPs are also sent termly to parents with the newsletter and published on the website.

There may be other homework tasks that may be set such as learning vocabulary / key terms, reading, research and revision tasks for end of term assessments.

All independent learning tasks are recorded weekly in the planner by students.
